Anise Mints (Ben-Hurs) Gray, anise-flavored mint, similar to the old "Ben Hurs". A nostalgic favorite since the 50's. Reader Reviews I ordered some of these and was utterly disappointed. They might bear some passing resemblance to Ben Hurs, but the licorice flavor is simply wrong. The original Ben Hurs had a flavor that is difficult to describe; some people would call it "soapy." There were elements of Sen Sen, candied ginger, and violets. Either you loved them or you hated them. The company that made them was bought out by another candy company, which in turn was bought out by the Hershey Company, and the original recipe for Ben Hurs is probably sitting in a dusty file cabinet somewhere, never again to be seen by human eyes. What a pity. |
